About Our Courses

The course is designed to assist in obtaining the knowledge required to qualify for the Recreational Boating Operators Licence. Marine Training Services is a Registered Training Organization approved by Marine Safety Victoria fully compliant with National Training Standards.

There will be no further licence test at Vic Roads
Victorian Recreational Boat Operators Licence is valid Australia wide

Course Content

  • Your responsibilities as a 'skipper'

  • Trip preparation and planning

  • Engine checks

  • Safety Equipment

  • Collision Regulation (COLREGS - Rules of the Road)

  • Buoyage System

  • Vessel lights and sound signals

  • Safe boat operation

  • Emergencies - person overboard, fire, collision

  • Cold water - hypothermia

  • Weather and wind - following seas

  • Free Surface Effect

  • Specific requirements for Personal Watercraft (PWC) endorsement

The course duration is approximately 4 hours.

Course assessment is a multiple choice exam. The minimum passing grade for both the boat operator's licence test and PWC endorsement test is 86 %. Course assessment IS NOT AN OPEN BOOK assessment and must be conducted on individual basis, not in groups
